Lebanese and Belgian bass, Shadi Torbey was born in Sieburg (Germany) in 1976. He graduated in Roman literature as well as in Cultural Management at the University of Brussels. With Ludovic de San at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels he earned the highest degrees in Opera and Melodie. His vocal training was completed at the Opéra Studio of La Monnaie and with José van Dam at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth. In 1999 he was awarded a “prix de la vocation” at the Singing Contest of Verviers, in 2001 he got the “Voix d’or” for melodie at the Voix d’Or competition and in 2004 he got the 3rd prize at the prestigious Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth. In the recital field of recital, he has performed in many festivals and concert halls such as the Palais des Beaux Arts and Conservatoire in Brussels, at the Festival of Aulne, Montpellier, Menton, and Istanbul. He sang several times the Winterreise with star pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha and recorded a CD of Melodies (Séverac, Meyerbeer, Saint-Saens) for the Cypres label. On stage he sang Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Collatinus (Rape of Lucretia), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Abner (Athalia), Caronte (Orfeo), Eremit (Der Freischütz), Colline (La Bohème). Lately he has been singing his first Leporello at Opera Zuid (Maastrich, Holland), Lord Sidney in Il Viaggo a Reims at the Academy of the Pesaro Festival, Don Prudenzio in Il Viaggo at La Monnaie. With Early Music Russia he sang Johan Mattheson’s Boris Goudenow (title role) and made his debut as Michel in Le Caïd by Ambroise Thomas at the Opéra de Metz (France). He made a highly appreciated debut as Nick Shadow in Rake’s Progress at La Monnaie. He had the privilege to work with talented conductors such as William Christie, Daniele Callegari, Patrick Davin, Eduardo Lopez-Banzo, Paul McCreesh, Stéphane Denève, Philip Pickett, Marcello Viotti, Alberto Zedda and such stage directors as Stéphane Braunschweig, Robert Carsen, Antonio Latella, Gérard Corbiau, Karl-Ernst and Ursel Herrmann…
Future plans include the part of Lord Sidney (Viaggo
a Reims) in opera houses such as Marseille, Montpellier, Nancy, Capitole de
Toulouse, Bordeaux, Reims, Vichy, Saint-Etienne, Tours and Nice. With the
Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire he will make a long tour of Mozart’s
Coronation Mass. Opéra de Lyon invited him to sing Lord Rochefort in Anna
Bolena, which will be revived at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. He will also
sing Leporello at Opéra de Rouen. |
