With the financial support of the British Council and the Belgian Foundation for Talent, soprano Sophie Karthäuser completed her studies with Noelle Barker at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Sophie has been invited by prestigious ensembles and orchestras such as The Academy of Ancient Music, les Arts Florissants, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Les Talens Lyriques, Die Akademie für Alte Musik, the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Gewandhaus Leipzig, The Monteverdy Choir and Orchestra... She sang with conductors such as Louis Langrée, Kent Nagano, William Christie, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, Kazushi Ono, Christian Zacharias, Thomas Hengelbrock, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Jérémie Rhorer, Kurt Masur, John Eliot Gardiner and Riccardo Chailly.

In 2003, Sophie won the Price of the Public at The Wigmore Hall song contest, she appeared in recital at the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels), at La Monnaie, Carnegie Hall and various opera houses : Lille, Nantes, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Frankfurt and at the Cologne Philharmonie, together with pianists such as Graham Johnson, Eugene Asti, David Lively and Cédric Tiberghien.

Sophie experienced a dream-come-true Mozart debut: she sang her first Pamina next to René Jacobs at La Monnaie and her first Susanna next to William Christie at Opéra de Lyon. She has appeared in several Mozart roles, such as Tamiri at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Sandrina at Theater an der Wien, Despina and Zerlina at La Monnaie, Ilia at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, La Monnaie and Théâtre des Champs Elysées. Further Mozart projects include Susanna at Glyndebourne Festival and Ilia at Theater an der Wien. Other opera projects include Polissena in Händel’s Radamisto at Theater and der Wien under René Jacobs, Angelica in Orlando at La Monnaie, Médée (Charpentier) at Théâtre des Champs Elysées.

She has recitals scheduled at La Monnaie, Berliner Philharmonie, Montréal, Wigmore Hall, Paris Opera, etc.

Sophie’s recordings include a solo album of Gretry arias (awarded with Diapason découverte), Mozart’s complete songs, Mozart arias with Kazushi Ono and La Monnaie (awarded by Télérama), Haendel’s Faramondo (Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros), as well as a CD of French melodies inspired by Verlaine. She recorded the title parts of Susanna (Händel) with William Christie and of La Finta Giardiniera with René Jacobs, these recordings are yet to be released.
