Thomas Tercieux; 2nd Violin Jean Sulem; Viola Xavier Gagnepain; Cello The members of the Quatuor Rosamonde studied together at the Paris Conservatoire (C.N.S.M) where they all graduated with Premiers Prix. As a quartet (formed in 1981) they trained at the Paris Conservatoire and Yale University. Their meeting and friendship with Raphael Hillyer, violist for 25 years with the Juilliard Quartet, proved decisive: it was he who introduced them in their early years to the Tanglewood Festival in the United States. From Eugene Lehner, violist of the Kolish Quartet and a friend of Schoenberg and Bartók, they received the heritage of the teaching of the great masters of the early twentieth century. At the International Competition in Evian in 1983 the Quatuor Rosamonde was unanimously awarded the Prize for the best performance of contemporary works and the Special Prize of the international jury of critics. In 1986 it won First Prize at the International String Quartet Competition organised by the Union of European Radios in Salzburg. The Quatuor Rosamonde leads an international career, making regular appearances in the United States, Japan and in the great European concert halls, including the Mozarteum in Salzburg, London's Wigmore Hall, the Bruckner Haus in Linz, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. Critics worldwide have hailed "the beauty of its tone", " the precision of its style", "the refinement and elegance of its phrasing". The Quatuor Rosamonde's discography reflects the wide variety of its repertoire, ranging from the Viennese classics to works of the present day and is repeatedly crowned. In 2005, the Quatuor Rosamonde was awarded the CD “Grand Prix” of the Académie Charles Cros. Several composers have written pieces for the ensemble and they have worked closely with Pascal Dusapin, Philippe Fénelon, Renaud Gagneux, Philippe Hersant, György Kurtàg, Jacques Lenot, Michèle Reverdy, François Sarhan, Eric Tanguy, Thon-That Tiêt and others. The Quatuor Rosamonde has worked with and enjoyed the friendship of the composer Henri Dutilleux for more than 20 years. They have performed his Quartet Ainsi la Nuit all over the world and have recorded this masterpiece twice. Their interpretation is regarded by the composer himself as a reference version. In 2011, two documentary films have been realised on the Rosamonde Quartet by Vincent Bataillon: “Notes pour un quatuor” is focused on the creation process in the interpretation of the Rosamonde of the Beethoven quartets, and “Ainsi la Nuit” reports on the fertile collaboration of over two decades between a composer and his performers, around the string quartet written by Henri Dutilleux. |
